A Little Bit About Rye…
Bourbon Country’s Single Barrel Rye
“Rye” has been one of the most dependable and rewarding females to ever be part of the Bourbon Country Retrievers family. Throughout her career, she has embodied everything we value in a Labrador Retriever—athleticism, intelligence, trainability, and an exceptional temperament both in the field and at home.
A beautifully built yellow female with an impressive pedigree, Rye combines generations of accomplished field trial and hunt test genetics. Her lineage includes elite retrievers such as FC AFC Louisiana Black Magic Spell, Bayou Magic’s Dave Robicheaux MH QAA, and numerous accomplished Master Hunters, Hunting Retriever Champions, and Qualified All-Age retrievers. Those genetics are reflected in the natural ability and versatility she has demonstrated throughout her life.
Rye proved herself early as a talented retriever, earning her Hunting Retriever HR title. She possesses outstanding marking ability, tremendous natural desire, and the biddable temperament that makes exceptional retrievers enjoyable to train. While we believe she had the talent to accomplish even more in competition, her greatest contribution to Bourbon Country Retrievers came as a producer.
Over the years, Rye has consistently passed along her intelligence, trainability, and wonderful disposition to her puppies. Many of her offspring have become exceptional hunting companions, competitive retrievers, and, most importantly, cherished members of their families. There is no greater compliment to a breeding program than hearing from families whose dogs have exceeded every expectation, and Rye has helped create countless success stories.
Following her final planned litter in August 2026, Rye will officially retire from our breeding program. Retirement doesn’t mean slowing down—it simply means beginning a well-earned new chapter. She’ll spend her days doing what Labradors love most: running freely across our farm, swimming whenever she can, and, beginning this fall and winter, joining one of our hunting partners in the duck and goose blind. After years of giving so much to our program, we’re excited to watch her simply enjoy being a dog.
Rye’s legacy will not be measured only by titles or pedigrees, but by the generations of wonderful Labradors she leaves behind and the families whose lives have been enriched because she was part of ours.

Fun Fact

Rye’s name was inspired by our Kentucky roots. As the home of Bourbon Country Retrievers, we wanted a name that reflected the rich heritage of Kentucky bourbon, where rye grain has played an important role in crafting many of the world’s finest whiskeys. It felt like the perfect name for a dog that has become such an important part of our program and our family.
